Social Media Qualities

By: | Published: November 24, 2009 | Filed under: About small businesses

“Social Media” is a hot buzz term these days for those in large companies and small start-ups alike. As Sunshine’s own Gary Vaynerchuck has said, “by next year ‘new media’ will simply be referred to as ‘media”.” With that, and given the ubiquitous presence of Twitter, Facebook and the like in day-to-day business, I am particularly pleased by this Webnewser post on good qualities for those working in the social media landscape.I’m especially fond of number 3, about possessing intellectual AND emotional curiosity, and number 5, about shelving egos (and egos in the social media field can be huge or humble, depending!). One of my biggest issues with those who have “social media” in their day-to-day job titles and descriptions are that, the more influence they amass, they more they sequester themselves from those who hold less “weight” than they do. Some of the most intriguing ideas and some of the best feedback can come from people with only a handful of Twitter followers-you just have to be willing to listen. And I definitely think “listening” should be at the top of the social media qualities list.
